But what do those words actually tell you about the quality of the food inside the bag?
For pet parents, choosing the right dog food can quickly become overwhelming. There are countless brands, recipes, ingredients, and opinions to sort through. At Earth Options Pet Food, we believe choosing your dog’s food should start with something much simpler: understanding what is actually in the bag, where those ingredients come from, and how your dog responds to them.
Because when it comes to dog food, quality is about much more than the packaging.
Start With the Ingredients
One of the first places to look when comparing dog foods is the ingredient list.
The ingredient list tells you what ingredients are used and lists them by weight, but it is only one part of evaluating a food. The Ontario Veterinary College recommends looking at the full label, including the guaranteed analysis and nutritional adequacy statement, rather than judging a food by the ingredient list alone.
At Earth Options, our recipes feature proteins such as chicken, turkey, lamb, and salmon, along with carefully selected fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients designed to create nutritionally balanced recipes.
We also believe transparency matters.
You should be able to understand what you are feeding your dog without needing a dictionary to decipher every ingredient.
Where Your Dog’s Food Comes From Matters
Knowing what is in your dog’s food is important and knowing where it comes from matters too. Earth Options takes pride in knowing where our ingredients are sourced. We prioritize Canadian-sourced ingredients whenever possible, with our lamb sourced directly from New Zealand. Just as importantly, no Earth Options ingredients are sourced from China.
For us, ingredient sourcing is not simply something to mention on a package. It is part of how we think about quality from the beginning. We want pet parents to feel confident not only about what they are feeding, but also about where those ingredients originated.
Don’t Get Distracted by Buzzwords
Pet food packaging can make almost every bag sound like the healthiest food on the planet. Words such as “premium,” “natural,” and “superfood” may sound reassuring, but they should not be the only reason you choose a recipe.
Instead, look beyond the front of the bag.
- What are the main ingredients?
- Are the protein sources clearly identified?
- Do I understand what I am feeding?
- Does the company tell me where its ingredients come from?
- Does this recipe suit my individual dog?
A beautiful bag can catch your attention.
The full label, nutritional adequacy information, and the company’s transparency should earn your trust.
Pay Attention to What Isn’t Included
Sometimes quality is also about what a company chooses to leave out. Earth Options recipes are made without corn, wheat, soy, artificial preservatives, animal by-products, or undefined meat sources.
That does not mean every dog needs to avoid every one of these ingredients. Dogs are individuals, and their nutritional needs can vary. It simply reflects the choices we have made when developing our recipes and the type of food we want to offer Earth Options families. Our goal has always been straightforward: create wholesome recipes using ingredients we can feel good about feeding to our own dogs.
Grain Free or With Grains?
One of the questions pet parents frequently face is whether to choose a grain-free recipe or one containing grains. The answer does not have to be one-size-fits-all.
Some dogs do very well with grains. Others may need a different recipe based on their individual needs, sensitivities, preferences, and veterinary recommendations. The presence or absence of a particular ingredient does not, by itself, determine whether a diet is nutritionally appropriate.
That is why Earth Options offers both grain-free recipes and recipes with grains.
Rather than assuming one style of food is automatically better than another, we believe the better question is: Which recipe works best for your dog?
Puppies, Adults and Seniors
Another common question is whether dogs need completely different foods throughout every stage of their lives.
Earth Options kibble recipes are formulated for all life stages. In AAFCO nutrient-profile terminology, “all life stages” covers growth and reproduction as well as adult maintenance. The Pet Food Association of Canada notes that Canadian pet food manufacturers commonly use AAFCO nutritional guidelines when formulating complete and balanced diets. Individual dogs can still have different needs based on age, body condition, activity level, and health.
Our breeder community has used Earth Options with dogs ranging from young puppies through adulthood and into their senior years. As dogs age, their individual calorie and nutrient needs may change, so feeding amounts and overall diet should be reassessed as needed.
The amount a dog needs will naturally change depending on factors such as age, size, activity level, body condition, and individual metabolism.
As always, puppies and dogs with specific medical or nutritional needs should be discussed with your veterinarian.
Your Dog Will Tell You a Lot
The ingredient label matters, but the dog standing beside you matters even more.
When deciding whether a food is working well for your dog, pay attention to the whole picture.
- How is their energy?
- How does their coat look?
- Are they maintaining a healthy body condition?
- Do they enjoy eating the food?
- How is their digestion?
And yes, we are going to talk about poop.
Stool quality is one useful day-to-day observation when assessing how a dog is responding to a diet. Consistent, well-formed stools can be a positive sign, but stool alone does not determine whether a food is nutritionally appropriate for an individual dog.
It is why we like to say: When it comes to quality, the proof is in the poop. Dog people understand.

So, What Makes a Quality Dog Food?
There is no single ingredient, buzzword, or marketing claim that determines whether a dog food is the right choice.

- Understand where those ingredients come from.
- Look for clear information about the ingredients, nutritional adequacy, and the company making the food
- Consider what works for your individual dog.
- Pay attention to your dog’s body condition, energy, appetite, coat, digestion, and overall well-being.
