This plan assumes a young puppy (8–12 weeks) but can be adjusted for age, temperament, and breed.

Focus on short, positive sessions (2–5 minutes), lots of reinforcement, and reasonable expectations.

⭐ WEEK 1 (Days 1–7): Acclimation & Early Basics

Goals

  • Build trust and comfort

  • Begin crate, basic commands, and bathroom routine

  • Start gentle socialization

Daily Themes

  • Day 1: Home acclimation + crate intro

  • Day 2: Handling & grooming intro

  • Day 3: Collar + leash introduction

  • Day 4: Controlled socialization + household sounds

  • Day 5: Crate confidence

  • Day 6: Bathroom routine + cue “go potty”

  • Day 7: Play, bonding, mental stimulation


WEEK 2: Structure, Confidence & Routine Building

Training Focus

  • Strengthen sit, introduce down, stay

  • Short alone-time practice

  • Expanded socialization

  • Crate comfort with closed door

Daily Activities

  • 5–10 minute command sessions: sit, down, stay, name recognition, recall

  • 3–5 short alone-time sessions in crate (1–3 minutes to start)

  • Introduce puppy to:

    • Car rides

    • Different surfaces (grass, carpet, tile, gravel)

    • New sounds (vacuum at distance, doorbell)

  • Continue potty training routine

  • Daily handling practice (paws, ears, grooming tools)

End-of-week goal

Puppy enters crate happily, can sit/down on cue, and is comfortable with daily handling.


WEEK 3: Leash Skills, Enrichment & Early Impulse Control

Training Focus

  • Building leash manners (no pulling)

  • Intro to “leave it” and “drop it”

  • More structured enrichment

Daily Activities

  • 5-minute leash practice indoors → backyard → driveway

  • Start “leave it” with treats in your closed hand

  • Soft toy “drop it” training

  • Daily enrichment:

    • Snuffle mat

    • Frozen KONG

    • Short hide-and-seek games

  • Introduce 1–2 new people per week

  • Continue short crate sessions during daytime

End-of-week goal

Puppy walks calmly for short distances and begins to understand “leave it” and “drop it.”


WEEK 4: Socialization Expansion & Confidence Training

Training Focus

  • Safe, positive exposure to the world

  • Building bravery & adaptability

  • Strengthening obedience foundations

Daily Activities

Expose puppy to 2–3 new experiences/day, such as:

  • People with different clothing (hats, sunglasses)

  • Controlled dog-to-dog socialization (friendly, vaccinated dogs)

  • New environments:

    • Parking lot perimeters

    • Pet-friendly stores (carry if vaccination isn’t complete)

    • Parks (not dog parks)

Training drills:

  • Stay for 3–5 seconds

  • Recall with distraction

  • Begin loose-leash walking in mild distractions

End-of-week goal

Puppy confidently handles new experiences and maintains basic commands around mild distractions.


WEEK 5: Beginner Obedience + Household Manners

Training Focus

  • Extend obedience commands

  • Build manners inside the home

  • Continue crate independence

Daily Activities

  • Lengthen stay to 5–10 seconds

  • Practice settling on a mat/place cue

  • Introduce:

    • Boundary training (“wait” at doors)

    • No jumping practice (reward four paws on floor)

  • Short crate rests while you move around house

  • Increased physical exercise (age appropriate)

End-of-week goal

Puppy begins to understand boundaries, settles more easily, and performs longer stays.


WEEK 6: Impulse Control, Real-World Leash Practice & Longer Focus

Training Focus

  • Polite greetings

  • Leash skills in public

  • Stronger recall

Daily Activities

  • Practice loose-leash walking in:

    • Quiet streets

    • Store parking lot edges

    • Parks (not dog park)

  • "Come" training with increasing distance (using long line)

  • Practice ignoring:

    • Other people

    • Birds

    • Squirrels

  • Introduce beginner agility fun:

    • Walking over a board

    • Short tunnel (if available)

  • Longer crate time (15–45 min increments)

End-of-week goal

Puppy stays focused around moderate distractions and greets people more politely.


WEEK 7: More Advanced Socialization & Obedience Reliability

Training Focus

  • Real-life scenarios

  • Stronger patience and control skills

  • Mental challenges

Daily Activities

  • Introduce supervised time around:

    • Bicycles

    • Joggers

    • Strollers

    • Traffic at a safe distance

  • Improve obedience:

    • Stay for 15–30 seconds

    • Down-stay for short durations

    • Recall from mild distractions

  • Puzzle feeders with multiple steps

  • Scent games:

    • Find hidden treat

    • Track a treat trail

End-of-week goal

Puppy handles busy environments calmly and obeys commands with fewer reminders.


WEEK 8: Skills Integration & Everyday Preparedness

Training Focus

  • Practical, real-world behavior

  • Preparing for adolescence

  • Confidence and independence

Daily Activities

  • Combine skills:

    • Loose-leash walking + sit at crosswalk

    • Recall + stay + release cue

  • Car ride practice with calm behavior

  • Basic grooming routine (bath, nail file intro)

  • Controlled greetings with new dogs and people

  • Puppy learns to be alone for 20–60 minutes (gradual)

End-of-week goal

A socially confident puppy who understands fundamental commands, routines, and manners.
