Portuguese Water Dog (PWD)
What Is a Portuguese Water Dog?
A Portuguese Water Dog is springtime on four paws.
It’s a joyful grin, eyes full of mischief and innocence, and a brilliant little mind wrapped in a shaggy coat designed for cuddles. It’s a gentle paw tugging the blanket from your shoulders and a cold, curious nose nudging your neck at sunrise. It’s your loyal shadow, always a step behind—or more likely, two steps ahead.
A PWD is powered by springs, capable of bouncing shoulder-high in a single bound, and convinced that leaping beside you is the very definition of “heeling.” They can launch into the air facing north and land facing south—stealing your hat and sneaking a kiss in one smooth move.
They are loyalty laced with mischief, intelligence spiced with humor.
A PWD can hear you pick up the car keys from five rooms away, but can’t hear you call “come” from five feet. The sound of running water in their dish brings them running, but a bath being drawn? Gone without a trace.
They’ll ignore their own dinner, but devour their sibling’s—even if it’s identical. And they’re always on their best behavior... unless you have company.
A PWD is a glorious blur of fur, a whirlwind with a wagging tail. Or sometimes, they’re a wistful face in the window, paw to the glass, wishing you’d turn back around.
They’re the reassuring nudge under your elbow on a bad day, and the curious tilt of the head as if to say, “Tell me everything.”
A PWD is an audience, a companion, a confidant, and a friend.
Living with a PWD isn’t always easy.
But living without one?
Unthinkable.
